Surf&Kite

If you want surf in a remote location, both safe and difficult waves, on a range of different breaks, then Heaven on the Planet is ideal.  With everything in one unspoiled location, Hotplanet is the perfect place for surfers, wind surfers, kite surfers and divers. Using our outrigger surf boat, motor bikes or car, you can easily get to Inside and Outside Ekas, the nearby “Southern Reefs”, or the many other breaks in Lombok and West Sumbawa. It’s only a 20 minute pleasant walk between the two main breaks.

There are limited numbers staying at the Hotel, so you won’t get there to find all the breaks crowded. This means you feel like you own the break and you can’t imagine how good this feels. To ensure you have uncrowded waves during your stay, we now offer the first surfing under lights in Indonesia. This is only for guests of the hotel, so you have absolute priority for the waves.

Your accommodation at Heaven on the Planet overlooks all of the breaks at Inside Ekas. Just paddle, walk at low tide or take the boat at high tide. Check out both Inside and Outside Ekas with our boat … the classic Indo surfing experience.

Kiting

Kite surfing has become very popular in eastern Indonesia because of the moderate strength and reliable south-east trades which are suitable virtually every day during the dry season. Ekas Bay, like Uluwatu headland in Bali, is sheltered in these winds. However, there are kilometres of nearby reefs just south of the Resort which have been highly praised by our kite surfing visitors. This zone has the required combination of alongshore winds over broad lagoons with offshore surf breaks on the reef crest (see photograph above). The broad gaps in the reef are ideal for escaping offshore to ride back over the reef crest through the surf back into the lagoon. The wide sandy beaches are ideal for launching. Our transport will take you there, wait and bring you back. We provide drinks and boxed lunch if you want to stay all day.  The transport and food is free for our package guests.

Description of the surf breaks

Inside Ekas is best known as a left and right hand peak (see the Indo Surfing Guide) which breaks in medium and large swells. The right is a high quality wave, particularly on low tide, suitable for advanced surfers. The left winds down the reef at high tide, a softer wave ideal for the less experienced surfer who wants a classic long ride. Both short and long boards are suitable on the left. The ride is longer at Ekas, but the left wave is like the well-known Grupuk peak, which has attracted many surfers from all over the world, particularly Japanese visitors.

Also in front of the property are Lombok’s only beginner surfing waves. The left and right “sand bar” peak is ideal for learning to surf. We provide surfboards and surf lessons. Directly in front of the property, a classic wave winds down the reef on moderate swells making an easy left for long boarders or beginners.

Outside Ekas, a solid left break, is best on high tide in large swells when a very long, heavy wave peels over 400-500 m down the reef and barrels in sections. The square take-off jacks up into a thick lip, over deep reef. Outsides also works when the swell is smaller, particularly around mid tide … a bit peaky at times, but still heaps of fun with some power in the waves.

The nearby “Southern Reefs” are really good in the wet season, or early mornings before the wind comes up in the dry. These reefs face straight into the swell and so they break nearly all the time. Hollow left and right peaks break in small swells. In large swells, one newly discovered hollow right winds over 800 m down the reef on the open coast.

We’re still learning about the district, so come and help explore.
